What Is A Full Smile Design?

Refining your smile is about more than simply improving your appearance; how your smile looks impacts almost every aspect of your life, including your confidence and self-esteem. Your smile is one of the first features that others notice about you, so it’s important to be happy with yours.

At Miami Sedation & Cosmetic Dentistry, we can help you achieve the smile you’ve been dreaming of. Using 3-D technology, we can take a picture of your current smile and manipulate it to create a custom-designed image of how you want to look, all done in-office before you make a commitment to the procedure.

The Full Smile Design Process

Once you’re happy with the image of your potential results, Dr. Bana will discuss the necessary steps to achieve your goals. This could be a single procedure, like veneers or whitening, or a combination of multiple procedures.

Who is a Good Candidate for the Full Smile Design Procedure?

You may be a good candidate for this procedure if you’re unhappy with your smile and unsure of what to do to improve its appearance. During the consultation, the dentist will discuss your cosmetic objectives and how to best achieve them.

Possible Procedures

Depending on the results you’re looking for, the full smile design process could include a number of cosmetic dentistry procedures, including:

Veneers

Veneers are thin porcelain covers that adhere to your teeth after your teeth have been etched down, giving you an aesthetically pleasing and classic look. Veneers are tooth-colored for the most natural appearance and are personalized for your teeth. They can last up to 15 years before needing to be replaced, especially with good overall dental hygiene and care, and many patients report little discomfort during the experience.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is another procedure that could be included in the full smile design process, and most people find that bright, healthy-looking white teeth are a significant part of overall satisfaction with their smile. Over time, teeth can become yellowed and stained, especially through cigarette smoking and eating certain foods, such as tomato or soy sauce. At our office, the Zoom! whitening procedure consists of the following steps to a brighter smile:

  • Any visible surface stains are smoothed off and the gums are coated in a protective barrier
  • A concentrated whitening gel is brushed on your teeth and the dentist uses a light to trigger oxidation
  • After 15 minutes, the gel is rinsed off and the procedure is repeated several times if necessary

Sometimes, this procedure is enough and you may decide this is the only one you want. If you’re looking to improve your smile further, it can easily be combined with other cosmetic treatments.

Composite Bonding

Composite bonding is a great option for fixing a variety of minor issues, such as chipping and uneven spacing. Using a composite resin material that matches the color of your teeth, Dr. Bana can fill chips and gaps for a more uniform appearance. With regular care, composite bonding can last up to five years, and many patients report it to be a comfortable procedure.

Gum Contouring

Teeth aren’t the only things that make a bright smile—gums are an important feature too. If you’re unhappy with the general appearance of your gums, a gum contouring procedure could be part of your full smile design. Gum contouring includes reshaping the gum line to decrease the appearance of receding or “long” gums and reduce the amount of gum tissue covering the teeth. As gum tissue does not typically regrow, this procedure is likely permanent.

Invisalign

Instead of traditional braces to straighten crooked teeth, Invisalign uses clear removable aligners to adjust the position of teeth gradually. Although it depends on your individual case, you could start seeing results from your Invisalign treatment after several weeks. Typically, the overall treatment can last around one to two years, but without the metal wires and brackets used with traditional braces, it tends to be a more comfortable experience that fits into a busy lifestyle.
